Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.   Proverbs 22:9

Not just in NYC where this was taken but in many many parts of the world there are homeless who are eking out existence the best they can.  Sometimes they are a bit scary to approach while other times it is safe to help them.  During our time in NYC we saw many people like this soul who was asleep on the steps of St. Thomas’ church; once I almost fell on top of two of them who had set up camp right outside of MOMA.  They had their carts with all of their belongings in them and had set up makeshift walls with cardboard.  I didn’t give this man anything as he was asleep and I was leery of approaching but I have given before.

Once in Washington, D.C. when we were lost and trying to find a restaurant a street person came up to us and offered to give directions.  I withdrew but DH engaged him in conversation, gave him some money for the directions and then continued to talk to him as he escorted us to the restaurant we were trying to find.  Nothing like directions and a tour guide, eh?  But in the end it is true, we are blessed when we bless others.

It was so strange and sad to see all that is Manhattan with the glitz and expense and these citizens sprinkled in the midst of it.

In San Francisco, there are many people living on the street and what is truly surprising is that after seeing them every day they just blend into the scenery and you stop thinking about them.

I’m not sure if that is a good or bad thing but I can understand it…and it is sad. Thanks for commenting.

I recently read an article in which it was estimated that between 30 and 50% of the World’s harvest goes to waste. Here in the US and Europe, a fellow blog reported, as much as 50% of our food is wasted. It is unconscionable that we allow this to happen when there are people starving. And we need not look to 3rd World countries for proof. It’s right outside our own doors.

And some restaurants throw stuff away instead of donating it. It is so sad to be so wasteful when so many are in need.

Feels good to help those in need without asking/getting anything in return.
