Shooting from the hip

Besides meaning something entirely different…in this case it literally means that I was shooting from the hip.  Yesterday was a bit of a holiday for some so off we went to the mall to walk around and have a bite to eat out.  Bringing my trusty Canon with me I meant to take some “street photography” but I’m still a bit shy about doing that.  It was at that point, while my camera was slung over my shoulder, that I had the idea to just hold the camera right where it was – at hip level – and just AF fire away and see what I would come up with.

I took most of the shots while walking around and a few you can see are from when I was in some stores.  I wonder if this is how children see shelves?  The last two shots weren’t from the hip, they were from eye level in order for me to get the view I wanted.  These resulting images are pretty much SOOC with minimal post processing.  Not trying to level things out made the images more interesting to me.

I believe I will try this again.

well I like your shooting from the hip… I must admit I can’t take a photo in a crowded place where there are people I don’t know… I feel the might think I’m a nutter…

Interesting perspective, isn’t it? PBS once placed a camera on a dog, giving us a dog’s view of the world. There’s is an entirely different world than the one we see.

  3. I’ve done this; it’s actually kind of fun to see what you come up with! Great shots!

  4. Love it! I’m going to play with this trick again soon–haven’t done so in too long, so I thank you for the nudge! I’m usually a patterns-not-people kind of image fan, but this (ahem) slant on street photography brings an appealing natural energy and serendipity that I really like!

This is an awesome idea…it’s kinda of like being a spy. I like how it gives a whole new perspective on the world around us. Gotta do this!!!
