Fancy meeting you there…

We were just about out of Chinatown when I noticed these “doors” were up and open on the sidewalk (anyone know what they are called?)  As we walked past I thought I saw some movement and I was right! There was a man busy doing his job underneath the restaurant.  I was tempted to take his photo but hesitated and walked away a few feet to read the menu of the restaurant he was under.  The place was packed with a lot of happy diners and as we read the menu we wished we had stopped here to eat.  We walked away stopping at the light when I just had to go back!

Returning to the basement scene I politely smiled and talked to the man working away.  It must have been a sight to passers by and those in the restaurant as there I was talking and gesturing with my camera talking to an opening in the sidewalk.  I took the shot, thanked the man, waved goodbye to him and smiled at the diners in the window who were looking at me wondering what was going on.  What was going on was a I was glad I went back and captured this moment.

Great shot, Teri! Many do not realize that in most of our major cities, there’s another city hard at work buried beneath the streets. You captured a rare glimpse of it. Well done!
