With a tip of the hat to the Beach Boys, in Key West there are several ways to get around. By foot, automobile, scooter, bicycle, taxi, and electric car/cart thingies. All of them can be rented; well not the by foot but you get my point. Many of the locals got around by bicycle to and from work on some uniquely decorated bikes. I don’t think I’ve ever seen bicycles with cup holders or a child’s seat that was in front of you before. Mentioning bicycles, you could also (for a sum of $5 a minute – what?!?) get someone to pedal you from one point to another. We did a lot of walking – easily around 4 miles a day – and rented some bicycles. The bike rental prices ranged from $7 to $15 a day and they are all coaster bikes, which really threw me off for a moment or two when I tried to break by squeezing the handlebar ferociously until I remembered to pedal backwards.
Great exercise and cheap way to get around and see the area!
- Key West Bicycle
Mainly due to its size, I doubt if there’s another American community where bikes play such a prominent role. Gives the island some character, not that there aren’t enough characters there already. 🙂
I think you may be right about the bikes and the area. Oh there are some characters there!!!! And I was happy to be one of them for awhile 🙂
Love the photos of all the bikes but specially the first one… have a very Merry Christmas…
You too, my friend. (And I will NOT be posting a picture of me pedaling around on the bike I rented – oh no!!!)
Love the bicycle photos. It’s freezing here this morning so I really wish I was in Key West on one of those bikes!! Ho Ho Ho!! –Lisa
Yeah, we have some snow here this morning. I would happily trade it for the bike again and a bit of a sunburn. Merry Christmas
Great photos. it is nice to see someplace warm. It looks like fun there. Merry Christmas
Oh how I miss the warmth! Flip flops just don’t work in 14 degree temps 😉 Merry Christmas
Oh cool…I used to love bike riding but the last time I tried, I ended up walking the bike home!!! Merry Christmas!
Let’s just say I was a bit sore the next day but other than one tiny hill and some gravel I did quite well. Oh! and I nailed myself in the shin with the bike lock LOL Merry Christmas
Cool pics there kiddo…I love bike riding especially in shore towns…it’s mostly flat LOL!
Flat is where it’s at!!!! LOL
