Throwback Thursday with the Doctor

If you don’t know by now I shall let you know that I am such a sci-fi nerdy girl and a major Whovian!  Since this post from 2011 I have met (and have the photos to prove it) Captain Jack from Doctor Who/Torchwood and the 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, and his companion, Karen Gillan.  I would melt if I ever had the chance to meet Tom Baker, doctor #4.  This YouTube clip will explain how a companion became a Time Lord.  It’s been a grand year for Doctor Who with the recent 50th anniversary of the show and now the latest doctor, Peter Capaldi, with his adorable Scottish accent.

When I got to meet Doctor Who and Doctor Donna

Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord—a time travelling, humanoid alien known as the Doctor. He explores the universe in his ‘TARDIS‘, a sentient, telepathic time-and-space-travel machine that flies through the time vortex. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, a common sight in Britain in 1963, when the series first aired. Along with a succession of companions, the Doctor faces a variety of foes while working to save civilisations, help ordinary people, and right wrongs. (wikipedia)

Starting in 1963 it continued until 1989 with a failed attempt to “regenerate” it (wink wink) in 1996; it was successfully rebooted starting in 2005 and has been going flat out since.  Different people have portrayed the Dr. since it first started and as of now they are on Doctor number eleven.  Everyone has had their favorite Doctor and occasionally the show has done “lets bring back all the Doctors in one show” episodes.  The program has also had it’s spin off shows like K-9 and company, Torchwood (YES!!!), and the Sarah Jane Chronicles.

I did not discover the show until I was up late with a newborn and channel surfing as I tried to keep awake at 2 in the morning.  It was then that I discovered Doctor number four, Tom Baker.  I was hooked and have been ever since.  I have seen just about every episode of every Doctor except for numbers one and two – I have not seen any of theirs sad to say – and I have seen every episode of Torchwood (Oh Capt. Jack!!!) and have on my Bucket List going to Cardiff to stand on the spot where the Torchwood entry portal was. I scratched off getting to see one of the Doctor’s from that list.  But on to the the title of today’s post.

When we were in London there was an exhibit showcasing many of the Doctor Who props and costumes.  I wanted to go but we didn’t make it.  I had read about the actors David Tennant and Catherine Tate (the Doctor and Donna the companion) performing in the play Much Ado About Nothing at the Wyndhams Theatre while we were going to be there.  Long story short, sold out before we got to England but when we went to the very charming old English theatre, they had some tickets available for the very first row.  I didn’t care I was going to see my sci-fi idol!!

We ate dinner at a restaurant right across from the theatre and who comes in to have a before show meal but Catherine Tate herself, sitting a mere two tables away from us!  I was beside myself but DH told me to not even think about going to bother her for an autograph and to put my cell phone away!  I was told that sort of behavior was frowned upon.  “But I’m a crazed but polite American fan!” I whined.  DH did not want me to embarrass him so no go.  Awwwwwwwwww man!  But the show was very funny and I can say I looked right up the skirt of David Tennant! (He wore leggings and a denim mini skirt as part of a masquerade costume in the play).  I was a happy little Doctor Who fan because I got to see and “meet” the Doctor and Donna.

Show away, I’ll be ok! 🙂 I’ve already swooned over your images of David Tennant … but, if you were to add Christopher Eccleston to the mix, I might just be catatonic.

Dr Who is something I’ve shared with my oldest daughter (ok, “caught the bug from” might be a better description). #9 and #10 are the Doctors and episodes we’ve seen together in the past, but our time together is limited now so no Dr Who for now.

Someday I’ll revisit them, and get caught up with Matt Smith and now Peter Capaldi. And then I’ll probably head back to the beginning …. 🙂

Good thing you didn’t listen to DH – I’ve never heard of the show but sometimes it’s hard not to be star struck.

Oh I listened to him in the restaurant else he would’ve hogtied me to the chair but after the play? Oh yeah! 🙂
