Why do we love to dress up and get scared?

It’s nearly that time of the year when televisions start running marathons of scary movies, haunted houses pop up everywhere, homes get decorated with pumpkins, skeletons and other frightening objects (some just go entirely too far with it in my opinion) it’s pumpkin everything to eat and drink, and sweets start taking on a bit of a macabre look.  Why do we do this? I know there are historical and cultural reasons for All Hallow’s Eve and Dia de los Muertos but what is it in the human psyche that makes us want to dress up to scare and be scared?

I really don’t have an answer, do you?  All I know is that it is fun to see the little ones dressed up and to be one of the “big” ones who dress up to go out to have nice fun; not the mean egging and TP tricking that is sometimes perpetuated.  I remember being very pregnant and taking my then 3 year old out for Trick or Treating; he wearing just a little mask and holding a plastic pumpkin that was bigger than his head.  When asked what I was dressed up as I replied…”A beach ball!”

All of my comic con costumes come in handy around this time of the year and I hope both the weather and my vertebrae cooperate and let me go attend the local Highball Halloween celebrations again this year.  If not it will be staying indoors for us and maybe making pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread.

I personally think we only like being scared if we already know we’ll be safe. Movie theater scary movies, or on TV, Halloween costumes, etc. It’s all in good fun.

  5. Maybe dressing up and celebrating is a link to our youth and happier times…

You nailed it above. I think it is a controlled adrenaline rush. I never have loved it, but I have friends who love to go to haunted houses and such.
