It’s nearly that time of the year when televisions start running marathons of scary movies, haunted houses pop up everywhere, homes get decorated with pumpkins, skeletons and other frightening objects (some just go entirely too far with it in my opinion) it’s pumpkin everything to eat and drink, and sweets start taking on a bit of a macabre look. Why do we do this? I know there are historical and cultural reasons for All Hallow’s Eve and Dia de los Muertos but what is it in the human psyche that makes us want to dress up to scare and be scared?
I really don’t have an answer, do you? All I know is that it is fun to see the little ones dressed up and to be one of the “big” ones who dress up to go out to have nice fun; not the mean egging and TP tricking that is sometimes perpetuated. I remember being very pregnant and taking my then 3 year old out for Trick or Treating; he wearing just a little mask and holding a plastic pumpkin that was bigger than his head. When asked what I was dressed up as I replied…”A beach ball!”
All of my comic con costumes come in handy around this time of the year and I hope both the weather and my vertebrae cooperate and let me go attend the local Highball Halloween celebrations again this year. If not it will be staying indoors for us and maybe making pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread.
A bloody mess it is!
A bloody good lot of fun 🙂
We really enjoyed going to Salem, Ma last year for Halloween. It is so much fun to see all of the costumes, etc. Nice captures here Teri. We all seem to enjoy the scary stuff.
Aren’t we silly like that? 🙂 I bet Salem for Halloween is over the top cool.
It is. We took the day off last year and went in mid-afternoon. I doubt we will try it this year. It is a Saturday and will be nuts.
I hear you but then again that could be super fun too.
Nice series. No answer on why. I hope you are progressing in a positive direction.
Thank you. I am getting better…not where I want to be but not where I was either which is good!
Good to hear. Keep going.
I personally think we only like being scared if we already know we’ll be safe. Movie theater scary movies, or on TV, Halloween costumes, etc. It’s all in good fun.
Very true but still, why do we enjoy being scared? Have to look into that one.
Perhaps curiosity. Getting a small peek into what a truly terrified person experiences?
Maybe. I think it could be just the rush and a certain amount of bravado.
There you go – I like your better!
Some of us are just adrenaline junkies 😉
Yes, I agree with that!
Maybe dressing up and celebrating is a link to our youth and happier times…
I agree but we can still dress up and be happy even when we are older 🙂
What a bloody mess! Hope you are feeling better. I have returned to bloggyville. I am finally feeling rested after a whirlwind of a summer. I will be posting about soon. Take care of yourself! You are in my thoughts!
There is some improvement and I am itching to get out and shoot but I still have to be cautious to not do myself damage again.
Great captures! I love seeing all the different costumes…that bacon costume is brilliant!

That guy was living dangerously around all of us bacon lovers 😉
I was never big on Halloween and am glad the sons are too old for it.
I loved dressing up and getting candy. It was like a big party to me. Still love the dressing up 🙂
You nailed it above. I think it is a controlled adrenaline rush. I never have loved it, but I have friends who love to go to haunted houses and such.
I still like roller coasters just not as crazy as I used to where I would get off the ride and run right back to get in line again.
I love roller coasters.
