The Cap City Diner and Bar (three locations in Central Ohio) is not your typical diner as in old, a bit grubby, full of chrome and located in a slightly “unique” building. I would call this more upscale than traditional but they do serve some classic diner fares. Breakfast items are only served for brunch on Saturday and Sunday and there are daily blue plate specials such as liver and onions and chicken pot pie. On the day we went the special was meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy – it was a popular order.
The food there is good but I’ve been spoiled by DH who has taken me to a lot of the classic old diners in New Jersey. If the coffee is served in those thick stoneware mugs, they serve corned beef hash and the pies are close to 6 inches high then it’s my kind of diner.

Meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy seem plain (you called it classic) for an upscale diner. Do people actually order liver and onions in a restaurant? It does have a colorful interior.
Even the comfort/classic foods are served with a bit of trendy or upscale panache. It must be ordered else it wouldn’t be Wednesday’s special.
My better half and I are always saying how much we miss the old fashion diner. Never did you get a bad meal!!
I still remember being amazed at the pies when DH first took me to one. HUGE!

There were a few diners in Columbus I went to a lot. J.J.’s was on the corner of Sullivant and Central Ave. It’s closed now but it use to be hard to get a seat in there. Then there’s Tommy’s Diner on West Broad St. It’s so good it closed The Florentine down across the street. I would rather have a plate of meatloaf and mash potato’s than some fancy pants thing I can’t pronounce or make out what it is.
Tommy’s is still here but I haven’t been there yet. I’m with you…give me good old fashioned comfort diner food at a great price.
