Photo Safari at The Wilds – American Bison

Bison, buffalo…the name is disputed by some.  Our tour guide informed us that when Europeans came to this country and saw these massive herds they called them buffalo after the only other types they had seen before.  They were nearly wiped out due to slaughter and commercial hunting.  Fortunately they did not become extinct and their populations are on the rise thanks to national parks and reserves.  There are only a few herds of pure bison around but many have been cross bred with cows.  Did you know that the American bison is the national mammal of the United States?

When we drove into the area where the bison were grazing it was like being transported back to a time  when these creatures roamed the plains.  It was amazing to be there in our safari bus while these great creatures came down one hill (there were more than in the one image here), crossed the road all around us and then up the other hill.  The last two photos are examples of what a bison does when it has an itch.

More about the American bison here.

And with this we end our photo safari at the Wilds.  I hope that you not only enjoyed it but that one day you come and visit or maybe something like it nearer to you.

Amazing photos – especially the ones where the bison is trying his/her itch!

  2. Nice images. It must have been amazing to see them when they roamed freely over the West.
