Sassafras and Maple

Sounds like the ingredients for some recipe but in this case it is actually about the respective tree leaves.  The leaves are still predominately green with only hints of autumn color.  We all know that certain maple trees give us that yummy maple syrup but did you know that the sassafras tree has been used for hundreds of years medicinally and culinarily; sassafras tea or file gumbo anyone?

Lack of rain and the weather staying warm for longer than usual has contributed to this lack of color but in recent days the weather has gotten chillier and wetter.  Hopefully the colors will perk up soon.
