I grew up visiting the St. Louis Zoo; Marlin Perkins and Wild Kingdom television and all. I’ve also visited the National Zoo in Washington, D.C, but after awhile I didn’t like visiting zoos as I felt “sorry” for the animals. Zoos and how the animals are on view have changed and in some instances zoos have become a lifeline for some endangered species.
Now animals are on view in somewhat natural surroundings and have more room to roam around in than before but still sometimes I wonder how they would be if they were in the wild. Probably in trouble in too many instances. Oh well….
We went to the Columbus Zoo (Jack Hannah land) recently and while many animals were not on display yet because of the weather and they are rebuilding some areas, there was still plenty to see, photograph and get in some walking and fresh air – through our masks. They are required here at our zoo. No problems with that although they didn’t help with some of the scents wafting past from certain animals!
What’s your zoo like where you live… that is if you’ve visited it. What zoo have you visited that you thought was outstanding?

many years ago i visited the national zoo in dc and it was nice. the zoo i have visited the most has been the san diego zoo and it is wonderful. i have also visited the la zoo but not in a long time as i live closer to the san diego zoo. i agree, zoos have changed greatly over the years. and have mostly shifted their focus so saving etc versus capture and display. i guess zoos are a necessary evil of our society.
Darn! I forgot that we took the kids to the San Diego zoo once a long time ago – very very cool place and I agree, zoos are sort of a necessary double edged sword.
2013 was the last time I visited our Zoo.
Any others in the world visited?
The San Diego Zoo, Zoos in Colorado, and the Zoo in Madrid, Spain. I’ve been to wildlife sanctuaries in NM, NV, AZ, CO, Italy and France, which are zoos of sorts.
Somehow I just knew you had been to ones overseas.
We lived in Madrid, so we went to the zoo. But when traveling, zoo’s are not on the list of things to see. We ended up at wildlife sanctuaries by chance, while driving around in Italy and France.
And what a great shot of with his trunk up! That means good luck you know… !
It does? I’ll take it!!!!
I can’t remember when I was last at a zoo. It’s been decades.
That happens sometimes.
I always loved zoos as a child and still do. The thought of the trapped life of animals does trouble the mind at times, but many of these animals are rescued animals which are not much suited to jungles. I can’t decide, but I love visiting zoos nevertheless.
I like visiting them for their variety and of course, photo practice 😉
